Scott has been navigating life with paralysis for over two decades, and has presented to over one million people in 38 countries. He graciously gave us some insight into his journey:
How did you become an inspirational speaker?
My speaking career began in 1994 when I began speaking on behalf of The Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis, the national fundraising-arm of the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. At this time I began delivering presentations that combined ongoing research updates on the Miami Project’s research coupled with my individual story of being paralyzed since the age of 15. In 1997, I embarked on my first world tour in which I began to share strategies and techniques for life enhancement that took the inspiration to a whole new level.
What motivated you to tell your story to others?
Our stories make us all unique and people love to be engaged through our stories. When I am sharing strategies and techniques for life enhancement, people are examining their own lives and since so much of my talks focus on making changes to our lives, the stories allow them to take a break from the intensity of self-reflection.
What do you do to stay positive on your journey through life?
Gratitude and being in the moment as much as possible allow me to stay positive. For every one thing that may be challenging, painful, depressing, frustrating, etc. about my life in that moment, there are at least 10,000 things that are wonderful about my life.
What advice do you have for others who are going through tough times, physically and mentally?
It is very important that one feels his or her feelings during tough times. Too many people project (play the blame game) or suppress (keep locked up inside) their emotions. We need to give ourselves permission to feel whatever is going on in our lives and express it in a healthy manner. Once we have a healthy release of whatever emotion it is that we are feeling, then we can gain the clarity and conviction necessary to move forward.
