Brain Injury Awareness Month

Brain Injury Awareness Month
March is Brain Injury Awareness Month, and the theme for 2018-2020 Brain Injury Awareness Month is Change Your Mind, designed to alter misconceptions about brain injury, educate people on the needs of individuals with brain injury and their families, promote awareness, and advocate for access to care after brain injury. The #ChangeYourMind Campaign’s mission is also to reduce stigma around brain injury through outreach and education, empower survivors of brain injury and their caregivers, and promote support for people living with brain injury and their loved ones.

About Traumatic Brain Injury

About 3.2 - 5.3 million Americans live with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and although many of us live our lives without an awareness or understanding of TBI, it’s a serious public health issue. TBIs account for approximately 30% of all fatal injuries, and people who survive TBI can experience impaired memory, movement, vision, hearing, and personality changes that can be short or long-term in duration. TBI impacts not only the injured person, but the lives of family members, loved ones, and communities as well, and the need for increased awareness and advocacy around TBI is essential. While people 75 years or more are at a higher risk for TBI, it is also the leading cause of death and disability in children and adults ages 1 to 44.

Brain Injury Awareness Month: How You Can Participate

Whether your life has been directly impacted by TBI or not, there are several ways you can support Brain Injury Awareness Month, including:
  • Get informed about brain injury and engage in conversations about TBI on social media by following the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) on Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn.
  • Invite your community to actively participate in the #ChangeYourMind campaign, and direct them to the BIAA’s website to learn more and sign up to become an advocate.
  • Download the BIAA’s #ChangeYourMind stamp and add it to your social media profile(s), website, email signature, or order a #ChangeYourMind T-shirt to encourage questions and conversation.
  • Invite a qualified speaker to your workplace, school, or community event to educate people about the impact of TBI, and provide people of all ages with information about TBI prevention.
  • If you or a loved one has TBI, share your story online, in person, and on social media to help promote awareness, education, and prevention.
  • Publicly recognize and support the important role caregivers, family members, researchers, and professional clinicians have in the lives of people with brain injury.
  • Join the BIAA’s online community for information, updates, and resources about TBI.
  • Donate to the BIAA to support people with TBI and their loved ones.
