Employers Scouting Veterans

 

Formerly known as “Armistice Day” to celebrate the end of World War I, and dubbed a national holiday in 1938, November 11 was renamed “Veterans Day” by President Eisenhower in 1954.  The purpose of Veterans Day is to show appreciation and tribute for American veterans who served or continue to serve our country honorably during war or peacetime.

Many military veterans serve anywhere from a few years to more than 20; separating or retiring at an age young enough to start a new career in the civilian sector.

A March 2016 report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows an unemployment rate for veterans at 4.6 percent, comparable to the May 2016 national unemployment average of 4.7 percent.

Corporations like Amazon, AT&T, Kroger, General Electric, and USAA are among top employers actively scouting employees with military experience, knowing they come armed with exceptional leadership, organizational and technical skills acquired from their time in the service. Military veterans also offer a unique perspective, problem-solving abilities, and self-discipline not as common among the civilian population.

Service members leaving the military may be overwhelmed by the number of resources fighting for their attention as they transition to civilian life. Fortunately, non-profit organizations such as the USO help guide a service member and their family through benefits and vetted resources best suited to help them achieve their goals. Whether pursuing continuing education, relocation, buying a home, finding a job, or all of the above, a USO RP/6 program case manager can walk them step-by-step, helping service members and their families successfully transition from military to civilian life.
